Bourbon Chicken recipe
Ingredients
- 1.5 lbs 700g chicken thighs or chicken breasts (cut into bite-sized pieces)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil or any cooking oil
- 2 garlic cloves minced
- 1/4 cup bourbon optional, but recommended for flavor
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1/3 cup brown sugar lightly packed
- 1/4 cup chicken broth or water
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1/2 teaspoon chili flakes optional, for a spicy kick
- 2 teaspoons cornstarch mixed with 2 teaspoons water for thickening
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Chopped green onions or sesame seeds for garnish
Instructions
- Prepare the Chicken:
- Pat the chicken dry with paper towels and season lightly with salt and pepper.
- Cook the Chicken:
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chicken pieces and cook until browned and fully cooked (about 4-5 minutes per side). Remove the chicken and set aside.
- Make the Sauce:
- In the same skillet, reduce the heat to medium and add minced garlic. Sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Pour in the bourbon (if using) and let it simmer for 1-2 minutes to cook off the alcohol.
- Combine the Ingredients:
- Stir in the soy sauce, brown sugar, chicken broth, apple cider vinegar, ketchup, and chili flakes (if using). Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
- Thicken the Sauce:
- Mix the cornstarch and water in a small bowl, then stir it into the skillet. Allow the sauce to thicken, about 1-2 minutes.
- Combine Chicken and Sauce:
- Return the cooked chicken to the skillet and toss to coat evenly in the sauce. Let it simmer for another 2-3 minutes to absorb the flavors.
- Serve:
- Garnish with chopped green onions or sesame seeds. Serve hot over steamed rice or with your favorite side dishes.
